Juniper Bonsai

popular bonsai types Juniper

Juniper are coniferous trees and shrubs that are part of the Cypress family. There are well over 50 different species of Juniper.

The Juniper is one of the popular bonsai types due to its widespread availability, low cost to get started and its easy to care for nature.

Juniper doesn’t like wet feet so good drainage is essential. And it grows best in full sun positions. Juniper is also very tolerant to pruning. And they are adaptable to a wide variety of styling techniques.

Japanese Maple Bonsai

popular bonsai types Japanese Maple

Japanese Maple are deciduous trees that like temperate conditions.

The Japanese Maple is one of the most popular bonsai types because of it’s pure beauty and variations in colors throughout the year. When you think about a beautiful Japanese garden, your mind pictures a Japanese Maple almost instantly.

Japanese Maple will require some shade during the day, especially in hot areas. They require good drainage and do not like heavy fertilising so be gentle. I always use slow release fertiliser on my Maples.

Fig Bonsai

The Ficus used for bonsai is typically a evergreen Fig that grows best in tropical conditions.

Out of the list of most popular bonsai types. The fig would be right near the top of that. They are very popular in many different religions. Buddha was enlightened after meditating under a fig tree for 49 days. Adam and Eve covered their bits with fig leaves, the list goes on.

But seriously everyone wants a indoor bonsai, and this is a great tree for that. They still require plenty of natural light, direct sunlight where possible. Fertilise regularly and they like moist soil (not wet, it still requires good drainage).

Chinese Elm

Chinese Elm is a semi-deciduous tree that can grow in most conditions and climates.

Chinese Elm are very popular because of their small foliage and readily available in most countries. They are very tough and suitable for beginners.

You will need good drainage but the Chinese Elm still likes to drink a bit. You don’t want wet soil constantly but don’t let it get to dry for too long. Can be grown indoors in a sunny location.
